It was a scorching hot Thursday afternoon, with the temperature ranging from the uncomfortable 80° to 90°F. But in Brgy. Maestranza in Intramuros, Manila, everything seemed normal and cool for dramatic actress Claudine Barretto as she prepares for a scene with veteran actress Jaclyn Jose.
It was her second taping day for her upcoming ABS-CBN soap opera entitled "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin." The said location would be part of her life thrice a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) until the soap ends.
"This is not the first time that I've worked in a slum area. I have been in one in "Mula sa Puso," "Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan," and "Saan Ka Man Naroroon." I have been through the worst locations. Whenever it rains, the area would flood easily and you can't get out of it anymore. Mas mahirap sa location namin ngayon because ang mga tao they are harder to control unlike those from our locations in Mandaluyong or Fairview ," she explained.
In the soap Claudine plays Nea, a good daughter who helps out her mother (Jaclyn Jose) in their carinderia business. She has a younger sister (Bea Alonzo) whom they have not seen for almost a decade in the story. The drama revolves around both her and her mom's longing to find her lost sister. Claudine's TV character possesses a positive outlook despite being poor. She is perky and tries to make everything light and easy for everybody. Nea is also a prayerful person, always believing that God will always let her find a way out of her problems.
"I haven't heard yet of an actor or actress who has reservations working in a slum area. Kapag mahirap ka, doon ka talaga sa lugar ng mahirap. You really have to deal with the things that you don't like—thingyroaches and rats," she shared. "But I do have one simple request whenever we shoot in places like this—and that's to have my own trailer." She says she feels safer and secure inside one rather than in her own car as fans usually bang on the latter just to get her attention, eventually disturbing her rest.
"Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin" will again pair her with long-time TV love teammate Diether Ocampo. Diet, as he is more popularly known, plays a rich businessman whose girlfriend is a very affluent society woman portrayed by actress Angelica dela Cruz.
"Our on-screen relationship will be more mature since we've worked together for a long time. I think the chemistry will always be the same because we have always enjoyed good rapport. He is also my best friend in and outside showbiz eversince," she described.
Since the public knows of her upcoming wedding to actor Raymart Santiago and Diether's real-life girlfriend Kristine Hermosa, Claudine hopes that their real-life romance won't affect their tandem in "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin."
Before this new teleserye came about, Claudine was first offered the title role of "Kampanerang Kuba" but she turned it down. "I gave it up because I don't want to do another fantaserye. " Marina " was just a one-time thing for me. It was experimental since hindi namin alam kung magugustuhan ng mga tao ito. It was something I and my director fought for, hoping na magustuhan talaga ng ABS-CBN. Pinagbigyan lang kami ng ABS-CBN because it was just for one season hanggang sa naging dalawa at tatlo. My passion is really in doing teleserye."
Claudine is also delighted over her new role as Nea. She has never encountered a character who strongly believes in God; that all her problems is offered to God for a solution. She also won't have any antagonists here unlike in her past soap operas where she's always seen running for dear life. If ever she'll be in a confrontation scene, it would be, according to her, done in terms of acting and not be very physical.
Besides the new teleserye, Claudine is also set to do a movie with Aga Muhlach (working title: " Dubai "). The 26-year-old actress hinted that she would only like to work on projects till November, saying she would like to rest before her wedding to long-time beau Raymart Santiago.
" Nakakatuwa kasi sinusubukan ko ng gamitin ang magiging married name ko na Claudine Santiago. So when I order food to be delivered, I use Santiago already," she smiled.
Calling herself "Claudine Santiago" maybe just one way of ushering herself into the life of Raymart, but she admits that they have talked about much bigger things concerning their union. For one, despite discovering that Raymart receives a bigger paycheck from his sitcom at GMA-7, she said she would still continue to work. She also doesn't want to have a baby yet not until Sabina, their adopted daughter, turns two or three years old. But if it happens then she'll welcome it with all her heart.
"If I have a choice, I want to be a full-time wife and full-time mother. But my parents told me na iba rin ang may sarili kang ipon at sariling pera. I don't think na I have to work because baka my husband will leave me. I feel more fulfilled if I'm working. Kapag sanay kang magtrabaho tapos aasa ka na lang, mahirap sa akin yan. Artista kasi , egoistic din at ma -pride talaga , so kailangan talagang nagtatrabaho ako unless marami na akong ipon ."
As reported, their wedding will be exclusively covered by her mother network ABS-CBN.
"What's nice with Raymart was that he weighed things well. He considered what is the best day for our wedding and all the details. I just told him na siya na ang bahala. I just showed him the proposal of Channel 2. We were just praying for an answer. In as much as I wanted it to be with Channel 2, I was also trying to be fair and objective for Raymart's sake, too. Hindi naman pwedeng lahat na lang ako ang nasusunod ."
Claudine also revealed that they don't have any pre-nuptial agreement citing their being a Christian as one of the reasons. But both already have a joint bank account.
" Pero humihingi ako sa kanya ng pang -shopping namin ng Mama niya monthly," she giggled. " Nakakatuwa when he gives me his paycheck and I enjoy doing our household budget."
With regards to her sister, Gretchen Barretto, she would like to personally talk to her and extend her personal invitation to their wedding. She said reports that she won't be inviting her sister are purely speculative.
"I'm really praying that we can find the time to get together and talk. Our wedding is a celebration and I would really like to have her there." -
