Claudine, a no-show at the rites, won Best Actress for her role in Star Cinema’s Nasaan ka Man while Robin bagged the Best Actor trophy for Unitel Pictures’ La Visa Loca. Nasaan dominated the race with nine of the 17 major and technical awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (for Cholo Laurel). Other Famas winners were Hilda Koronel, Best Supporting Actress (Nasaan Ka Man); John Llyod Cruz, Best Supporting Actor (Dubai); BJ Tolits Forbes, Best Child Actor (Exodus); and Ella Guevarra, Best Child Actress (Birhen ng Manaoag). Famas row ends, awards given
By DANNY VIBAS The Manila Times Life & Times columnist
The long-drawn-out awards season (for movies shown in 2005) came to a close Sunday night when the controversy-laden 54th Famas Awards were finally given at a studio of the government-owned National Broadcasting Network (NBN 4) in Quezon City.
The Famas was originally scheduled to give its awards on July 15 at the UP Theater, but was restrained by a temporary order by a Makati judge, based on a petition filed by a splinter group headed by Col. Jimmy Tiu of the Western Police District.
Unable to find a new producer to finance an awards night TV special, the original Famas group, headed by former foreign affairs official Art Padua, decided to hold the awards night on the NBN Sunday-night program, Pilipinas, Ngayon Na, hosted by Press Undersecretary Robert Rivera. The public affairs program airs weekly at 10 p.m.
Only a handful of stars attended the very unusual awards night, which proved to be a blessing because the studio could accommodate only 10 tables. Had all the nominees turned up, more than half of them would have been standees through the two-hour event.
Among the no-shows were practically all the winners. Robin Padilla was the only major winner present. He won best actor for the fourth time for his performance in La Visa Loca as a Pinoy worker obsessed with gaining a visa to the US. His previous wins were at the Gawad Tanglaw from a group of college teachers, the Gawad Urian of the critics’ group Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, and at the Golden Screen Awards of the Entertainment Press Society of the Philippines.
Absentee Claudine Barretto was named best actress for her portrayal of a woman who sees the ghost of her murdered lover in Nasaan Ka Man. The Famas is her second best actress trophy for the role, the first coming from the Star Awards of the Philippine Movie Press Club. Barretto was also 2004 Famas best actress for her performance in Milan.
Gloria Diaz was honored with a best supporting actress trophy for her role as Barretto’s foster mother in Nasaan Ka Man, the film which emerged as the Famas favorite for the year. The Star Cinema-produced movie also won best picture, best director for Cholo Laurel, best screenplay for Ricky Lee and Rafael Hidalgo, best cinematography for Charlie Peralta, best musical scoring for Jesse Lasaten, and best theme song for Ogie Alcasid.
Other winners were: BJ ‘’Tholites" Forbes, best child actor (Exodus), Ella Guevarra, best child actress (Birhen ng Manaoag), Mitoy Sta. Ana, best art direction (Enteng Kabisote 2) and Ignite Media, best visual effects (Exodus).
Although most of the nominees and winners were absent, the special awards recipients came in full force—Eddie Garcia, Armida Siguion-Reyna, Regine Velasquez, Jennylyn Mercado and Jed Madela.
Among the nominees who attended awards night were Ricky Davao, Marvin Agustin and Ellen Ongkiko, who directed Pusang Gala; Criselda Volks, Angelika Jones, child actor John Vladimir Manalo, Jojo Alejar, Mara Lopez, Maria Isabel Lopez and Marissa del Mar came for support.
