:-*fairy.

Film board: RP movies grew by 40 % from ’05
By Bayani San Diego Jr. Inquirer Last updated 09:46pm (Mla time) 03/14/2007
There’s good news for the local movie industry, according to the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
In its 2006 accomplishment report to President Macapagal-Arroyo, Rolando “Jackie” Atienza, the film board’s chair, declared: “The local film industry showed a remarkable turnaround in 2006. The [nationwide] revenues ... grew by 40 percent … from P1.025 billion in 2005 to P1.437 billion in 2006.”
Atienza furnished Inquirer Entertainment a copy of the report and, in an exclusive interview, reiterated: “The sales of foreign major studios declined (from P2.492 billion in ’05 to P2.370 billion in ’06). Same with the profits of foreign independents (from P660 million in ’05 to P607 million in ’06). In 2006, the only sector that showed growth was local movies.”
Atienza said the figures were provided by the Office of the Presidential Consultant on Entertainment and confirmed by Ric Camaligan, head of the National Cinema Association of the Philippines and the Motion Picture Anti-Film Piracy Council.
“There was a strong showing of local films last year, but there were other factors to consider,” Camaligan said. “One of them is the sustained fight against piracy by the Council and the Optical Media Board headed by Edu Manzano.”
Atienza added: “The upward trend is accurate because even ABS-CBN, in its third-quarter 2006 disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, reported that four of its movies earned over P100 million. According to a source, it earned a total of P700 million.” He stressed that the report did not include “Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo,” Star Cinema’s Metro Manila Film Festival topnotcher, which posted P142 million in ticket sales late last year.
The Inquirer obtained a copy of ABS-CBN’s quarterly report, which confirmed Atienza’s findings: “[Sales of subsidiaries] went up by 14 percent to P940 million in 2006, boosted by the strong performance of the film [division, which] released eight movies compared to four [in 2005].”
The ABS-CBN report continued: “Out of the eight Star Cinema films, four—‘Don’t Give Up On Us,’ ‘Close to You,’ ‘Sukob’ and ‘You Are the One’—grossed more than P100 million each. In particular, ‘Sukob’ earned over P200 million.”
This positive development in local movies, Atienza asserted, confirmed one major FDCP theory: “Quality sells.”
In the accomplishment report, Atienza noted: “It is the thesis of the FDCP that the growth of the local film industry is hinged on the ability to produce films of greater quality … [because] the market for Filipino films has changed tremendously.”
He told the Inquirer: “Moviegoers expect producers to churn out high-quality products because of the higher ticket prices. Moreover, the FDCP’s survey, conducted by the Social Weather Station, showed that over 60 percent of the movie-going public are high school graduates. They are more demanding. Local movies no longer cater to the bakya crowd. From the D-E classes, local films should now be [looking at] the A-B.”
Bigger challenge
Atienza theorized that the previous five-year decline in the profitability of local movies could be attributed to the producers’ failure to adapt to the changing market. “They continued to produce non-quality films, but kept upping ticket prices. It was like selling Divisoria products at Makati prices,” he said.
The bigger challenge now, Atienza admitted, was to recover local companies’ competitiveness vis-à-vis foreign mainstream films. “We should work for our old market share. Local films used to have almost 50 percent [market share, in terms of total box office receipts]. Last year, we posted only 25 percent.”
He stressed, “Out of the 55 local films produced last year, 42 were submitted to the Cinema Evaluation Board for grading and 32 were graded favorably—23 Bs and nine As.” A-graded movies are given 100-percent amusement tax rebate; B-films, 65 percent.
