23rd FAP Awards set Posted 05:54pm (Mla time) April 17, 2005 By Marinel Cruz Inquirer News Service
Editor's Note: Published on page A2-1 of the April 18, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
FILM Academy of the Philippines director general Leo Martinez is confident that this year's FAP awards ceremony will not be marred by controversy, because the group is "very transparent."
The 23rd FAP awards ceremony, set on May 14, comes on the heels of the controversial 21st Star Awards for Movies, hosted by the Philippine Movie Press Club in March.
"We made sure that no film producer or officer of the academy participated in any phase of the selection process," Martinez told Inquirer Entertainment in a phone interview on Saturday. "We don't want them to influence other members."
Thirteen members of the PMPC reportedly received money to give the Best Actor trophy to Piolo Pascual for his movie "Milan." The PMPC has formed a committee to investigate the irregularity.
"The FAP process of selecting nominees and, eventually, the winners, is very different," Martinez stressed. "Malinis ito (This is clean). These are peer awards, meaning artists get to pick from among their colleagues. Editors cite fellow editors, writers cite fellow writers ..."
Apart from the citers, Martinez pointed out, another group works as nominators. Their task is to pick the five nominees for each category. "They [citers and nominators] have been working since the beginning of the year. They are serious-and very careful-about what they do," The FAP chief said.
Martinez clarified that the recipient of the Best Picture Award should be nominated in at least three categories and win for either Best Director or Best Screenplay. There are 14 films competing this year, he added. Final screening will be from May 2 to 10 at the UP Film Center in Quezon City. The screenings are open to the public.
Final voting is on May 11, and the awards show is on May 14 at the Westin Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.

Is the FAP trying too hard to be the Oscars? By Danny Vibas Manila Times
ARE the glittering stars of Philippine show business raring to show up at an awards night as early as 2 p.m., just so they get a “red carpet” reception? It remains to be seen tonight at the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) awards ceremony, where everyone—the artistas and guests—is expected to show up coiffed, perfumed and bejeweled.
The venue of this year’s FAP red carpet reception is at the Westin Philippine Plaza’s brand new Garden Harbor Tent at the CCP Complex. Perhaps if you can afford to hang out at a 5-star hotel as early as noon, then the 2 p.m. call time is realistic. Otherwise, it might just be useless to expect the “fashionably [and perpetually] late” celebrities to brave the heat in their gowns and Barong Tagalog this afternoon.
But then again, the less busy stars might just make a sacrifice today since the FAP has long been considered the “mother” organization of the Philippine movie industry. The academy runs about 10 other guilds, including those of the actors, producers, directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, makeup artists and production designers. Its clout on its members may well compel them to troop to The Westin even at an ungodly hour.
Big-time preparations after all have been made by the FAP committee to make the event ala-Oscars in style. The awarding ceremony itself is slated to begin at 8 p.m. at the nearby Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center. From the hotel, the stars will be chauffeured in BMWs, Porches, Benzes and similar luxury cars to the PICC. If the stars turn up a good hour or two before pick-up time, they should be served thingytails as early as 6 p.m.
Store Specialists Inc. is giving away luxury lootbags too.
And to make this year’s event even more special, the award ceremonies will no longer be called the FAP Awards but the Luna Awards, after Juan Luna, the late great Filipino painter. The FAP, according to lawyer-film producer Espiridion Laxa, still very much a senior officer (he used to be the top banana but that honor and responsibility now belongs to actor Leo Martinez as FAP director general), decided to give the awards a person’s name, just like Hollywood’s Oscar or Spain’s Goya.
The name Luna Awards, according to Laxa, was chosen by an FAP committee from entries submitted in a contest. Two persons proposed the same name, so the prize of P10,000 was divided between them. One winner is a doctor at the health bureau of the city of Manila, while the other is a young woman in her late teens.
Tonight’s awards will be aired on delayed telecast over RPN 9 at 9 p.m. In 2004’s telecast, the red carpet reception given to the stars was hardly shown on TV. If the stars can still recall those footages, which were hardly edited for TV, who would waste time showing up at Westin Plaza hours before 8 p.m.?
Anyway, back to business: Tonight’s Luna Awards will have 12 categories with five finalists in every category. Industry practitioners designated as “voters” chose the winners through secret ballots yesterday. The results were tallied by a private accounting firm.
The nominees are…
For the Best Picture, it will be a fight among Aishite Imasu 1941 (MAQ Productions), Milan (Star Cinema), Naglalayag (Angora Films), Panaghoy sa Suba (CM Films) and Santa-Santita (Unitel Films International).
For Best Director, the finalists are Joel Lamangan (Aishite Imasu 1941), Olivia Lamasan (Milan), Cesar Montano (Panaghoy sa Suba), Erik Matti (Pasiyam) and Laurice Guillen (Santa-Santita).
For Best Actor: Dennis Trillo (Aishite Imasu 1941), Christopher de Leon (Mano Po 3 My Love), Piolo Pascual (Milan), Yul Servo (Naglalayag) and Jericho Rosales (Santa-Santita).
For Best Actress: Maricel Soriano (I Will Survive), Vilma Santos (Mano Po 3), Claudine Barretto (Milan), Nora Aunor (Naglalayag) and Judy Ann Santos (Sabel).
For Best Supporting Actor: Jay Manalo (Aishite Imasu), Eddie Garcia (Mano Po 3), Ryan Eigenmann (Milan), Ronnie Lazaro (Panaghoy sa Suba), and Johnny Delgado (Santa-Santita).
For Best Supporting Actress: Amy Austria (Beautiful Life), Gloria Romero (Beautiful Life), Jaclyn Jose (Naglalayag), Daria Ramirez (Panaghoy sa Suba) and Hilda Koronel (Santa-Santita).
For Best Screenplay: Roy Iglesias (Mano Po 3), Irma Dimaranan (Naglalayag), Cris Vertido (Panaghoy sa Suba), Ricardo Lee (Sabel) and J, Gracio/M Yamamoto (Santa-Santita).
For Best Cinematography: Shayne Clemente (Milan), Ely Cruz (Panaghoy sa Suba), Lee Meily (Santa-Santita), and Yam Laranas (Sigaw).
For Best Editing: Marya Ignacio (Aishite Imasu), Vito Cajili (Feng Shui), Marya Ignacio (Milan), Manet Dayrit (Sigaw) and Vito Cajili (Spirit of the Glass).
For Best Production Design: Joey Luna (Aishite Imasu), Raymond Bajarias (Feng Shui), Nuel Naval (Milan) and Edgar Martin Littaua (Santa-Santita).
For Best Sound: Ramon Reyes (Aishite Imasu), Albert Idioma (Feng Shui), Ramon Reyes/Angie Reyes (Kulimlim), Nestor Mutia/Angie Reyes (Naglalayag), Angie Reyes/Nestor Mutia (Panaghoy sa Suba).

And the Luna goes to: Claudine Barretto.....omg omg....was all I could mutter. She actually won the thing which I thought she didn't have much of a chance because of Nora & Vi's noms. Gosh, I can't tell you guys how happy & proud I am of Dine. The most important award giving body awarded her the best acting trophy....simply amazing. Now on to Cannes. It won't surprise me a bit if she wins there too. Now won't that be something? Btw....Jen, nice ugrade.

Barretto and Trillo beat veterans in first Luna AwardsBy Danny Vibas Source : ABS-CBN InteractiveThe actress Claudine Barretto won her first acting trophy Saturday night at the Luna Awards at the Garden Tent of Westin Philippine Plaza. The event was originally called the Film Academy of the Philippines Awards and was renamed to honor the late Filipino artist Juan Luna. Barretto won for her performance in Star Cinema’s Milan, which was filmed almost entirely in the Italian city. She played a domestic helper who fell in love with a Filipino searching for his mysteriously missing wife. Barretto bested actresses Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, Maricel Soriano and Judy Ann Santos in winning the award. Barretto’s leading man, Piolo Pascual, was nominated for best actor but lost the plum to Dennis Trillo, who portrayed a homosexual who had an affair with a Japanese officer in the war movie Aishite Imasu [Mahal Kita] 1941. Pascual and Trillo were first pitted against each other for the best actor award in the Philippine Movie Press Club’s Star Awards for Movies held in March, which Trillo also won. Jay Manalo, who played Trillo’s Japanese lover won best supporting actor, besting veteran actors Eddie Garcia, Johnny Delgado, Ronnie Lazaro and young actor Ryan Eigenmann. The night’s best supporting actress was Jaclyn Jose for her portrayal of an ultra-conservative mother in the movie Naglalayag. The movie Aishite Imasu 1941 was named best picture. The film’s director, Joel Lamangan, was also chosen as best director. The movie was also chosen for best editing (Marya Ignacio) and best production design (Joey Luna). Panaghoy sa Suba, produced, directed and starred in by Cesar Montano took home three awards—best screenplay (Cris Vertido), best cinematography (Ely Cruz) and best musical scoring (Nonong Buencamino.) Feng Shui, a horror-drama produced by Star Cinema and starred in by Kris Aquino and Jay Manalo won best sound engineering for Albert Idioma. The awards ceremonies were followed by the FAP Director General Ball held at the hotel’s grand ballroom. The FAP director general is the actor Leo Martinez. The awards night was managed for the second year in a row by actor Albert Martinez through his Big Mango Productions company.

Congrats Claudine...

The look of love was all over Claudine Barretto, who looked beautiful in her 50s look, and Raymart Santiago, who, we noticed, has become friendlier. She told us na wala siyang ka-hint hint na mananalo ng best actress for her performance in Milan, her movie last year with Piolo Pascual. Feeling niya, wala siyang karapatang umasa that she will bring home the trophy, considering na tatlo sa 'kalaban' niya ay mga subok na sa 'acting' kaya nga, mga awardwinning na: Nora Aunor (Naglalayag); Vilma Santos (Mano Po 3A) and Maricel Soriano ( I Will Survive). It's a first win for her. Bagama't she has been nominated innumerable times. The last time, in 2003 for her movie with Aga Muhlach, Kailangan Kita. Aga is very close, too, to Raymart's family. Si Randy Ortiz ang gumawa ng gown ni Claudine. And Claudine gave him only four days to finish it. "Kasi, di talaga naming sigurado ni Raymart na makakadalo sa Awards Night. Supposedly may taping ako for Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin ng araw na iyon. "Kaso nga," Claudine explained, "noong gabing dumalo kami ni Raymart sa party which Aga organized for his wife Charlene's (Gonzales) birthday (sa Le Souffle at the Rockwell CenterA), nagkita kami ni Liezl (Martinez, Aga's cousin). Kinulit-kulit niya akong dumalo sa FAP (Film Academy of the Philippines) event. Which is understandable. Her husband, Albert (Martinez) is the producer of the event. So I called up Tita Malou (Santos, producer of Ikaw Ang Lahat…) and told her about my predicament. Sabi niya sa akin, o, sige, if you feel like going, I-pack-up na lang natin ang taping." Claudine will be with the group of Malou Santos who will attend this year's Cannes Filmfest in France. Kabilang ang Milan sa apat na pelikulang lokal (the others are Panaghoy sa Suba, which Cesar Montano produced/directed and starred in, Dekada '70 and Bagong Buwan) na ipapalabas on a non-competitive competition sa nabanggit na prestigious international filmfest.

It's fate Jen. Meant to be talaga.
About the article, siguro with all the dayaan & accusations of bribery from the recent awards kaya siguro minabuti ng committee to limit the attendance of the tabs. 'Tsaka, if they were required to wear barong pala eh why complain kong di pinapasok ang photog nila who was only wearing a polo. Ummm, last time I checked a polo is not a barong.
