“I WAS 2003’s top Taxpayer in show biz.”

MOVIE and TV star Claudine Barretto thinks it's unfair for the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to zero in on show biz personalities in its drive against tax evasion.
First there was actor Richard Gomez, and then singer Regine Velasquez. The latest is Douglas Quijano, manager of Gomez, as well as Joey Marquez, Jomari Yllana and Gelli de Belen.
A total of 218 more show biz personalities are said to be under the BIR's tight watch.
Claudine, 25, told a small group of entertainment writers on Thursday that she was confident she's not on the list. She pointed out: "In 2003, I was the number one taxpayer [in show biz]. I paid more taxes than my bosses [at ABS-CBN]. My accountant and I are honest."
What's P25 million?
The rumored budget for the event is enough to send taxmen running after her.
"Paano kami hahabulin, eh, wala pa kaming nilalabas na pera, (What for? We have not spent a centavo yet)" Claudine protested. "And contrary to rumors, we're not spending [as much as] P25 million for the wedding. That's so wrong."
What she confirmed was, she and Raymart had granted her mother studio the exclusive rights for the wedding coverage, even if Raymart is a mainstay of GMA 7's "Lagot Ka, Isusumbong Kita."
Clautine recounted: "I told him, 'Babe, ikaw na ang bahala. Basta, ito ang proposal ng ABS.' He said, 'Babe, it's your day.' We went for ABS." She declined to give figures.
The couple won't be signing any pre-nuptial agreement, said Claudine. "We don't believe in that. We even have joint [bank] accounts."
Mrs. Santiago[/]
Although Claudine is a major ABS-CBN artist-having starred in the top-rated TV series "Marina" and in Star Cinema's blockbuster movie, "Milan"-she said Raymart earns more from his sitcom.
"He spoils me," she said. "When I was in Dubai recently (for the movie of the same title) and ran out of dollars, I called up and asked him to send me some. He did."
She has been using her soon-to-be married name, like a rehearsal, she said. "I use Mrs. Santiago when I call for pizza delivery. And I enjoy scribbling it."
Claudine and Raymart have the same birthday: July 20. They met years ago through her sisters Gretchen and Marjorie who were friends of his brothers Randy and Rowell. She said Raymart helped her weather the crisis brought about by the death of her former boyfriend, Rico Yan, in 2002.
Speaking of Gretchen, Claudine said she hadn't spoken to her elder sister following a falling out that also involved Marjorie. "I don't want to say whether or not she's invited to the wedding," said the youngest of the sisters. There's so much speculation and it hurts me when I hear or read that she's not invited. I'd want her to be there. If that's not possible, then maybe even just Dominique (Gretchen's daughter with partner Tony Boy Cojuangco)."
Claudine and Raymart have also adopted a baby girl whom they've named Sabina. Yesterday was Claudine's first Mother's Day with Sabina. She said the Barrettos and Santiagos were set to have lunch or dinner together."
"Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin" premieres later this month. The actress said she was planning to wrap up work by November, and spend all of December preparing for her altar date. "Ayoko naman na mag-taping the day before my wedding," she said.
In the series, Claudine plays a poor but optimistic character in search of a long-lost sister. Also in the cast are Diether Ocampo, John Lloyd Cruz, Angelika de la Cruz and Jaclyn Jose.
