Claudine Barretto may have lost the Best Actress plum to Judy Ann Santos in the recent Urian Awards, in which they were reportedly the heavy favorites. But Claudine doesn’t mind it all. She knows that everything is coming up roses for her.
Claudine Barretto may have lost the Best Actress plum to Judy Ann Santos in the recent Urian Awards, in which they were reportedly the heavy favorites. But Claudine doesn’t mind it all. She knows that everything is coming up roses for her.
At the press conference of her latest film, Nasaan Ka Man, Claudine cheerfully explained: "I was not even expecting to win in the Luna Awards of the Film Academy of the Philippines. So when I won, I felt that was more than enough honor."
Star Cinema, the producer of Claudine’s latest film, is the same outfit behind 2004’s Milan from which she won her first best actress trophy.
Claudine has indeed been very blessed lately. She has just arrived from France, where she attended the Cannes International Film Festival. The glow on her face that day told of how ecstatic she still is about the warm reception of the international crowd to her and her fellow Filipino actors when they walked down the red carpet.
Six Filipino films were screened in Cannes as part of the festival’s new program, known as Cinemas of the World that features outstanding films from Third World countries.
Milan was one of the four full-length feature films accepted, along with Bagong Buwan, Panaghoy sa Suba and Dekada ‘70. The two others were short films made by independent filmmakers.
Claudine was reportedly a big hit in the crowd for her elegant backless white gown with a deep plunging neckline designed by top couturier Rajo Laurel.
"It was not only with my gown that the crowd was amazed but also with the elegant Barong Tagalog worn by Piolo Pascual and Cesar Montano who joined me in the red carpet. I think it was their first time to see our national costume for men," said the drama actress.
The Philippine film entries were also well received by the festival’s international audience, Claudine pointed out.
Before she went to Cannes, Claudine had just come home from shooting a film with Aga Muhlach in Dubai. She also considers it a blessing that some of her films have been shot abroad, for such opportunity is rare in Philippine cinema.
Her love life is probably the best news of all. In January 2006, Claudine is all set to marry actor Raymart Santiago. By that time, the house that Raymart is building must be ready for their occupancy with their adopted daughter, Sabina, who turned 1-year-old a few days ago.
So, it’s easy to understand why Claudine feels happy even without a trophy from Urian.
Her role in Nasaan Ka Man, however, might just earn the nod of film award-giving bodies. Claudine admitted she found her latest film more challenging.
"I have never met anyone in my life who is like the young woman I portray in Nasaan Ka Man. My role is that of an adopted daughter who gets caught in a love affair with my adopted brother, even as my adopted cousin is also secretly in love with me. We were all raised practically in isolation from society by two old-maid sisters," she said.
The film director is newcomer Cholo Laurel, who collaborated with award-winning scriptwriter Ricky Lee to flesh out his story concept into an engrossing screenplay. The movie was shot entirely in Baguio City.
Jericho Rosales plays Claudine’s adopted brother, while Diether Ocampo is the adopted cousin. Hilda Koronel and Gloria Diaz portray their spinster foster mothers. The characters in the story harbor many secrets, giving the plot many perverted twists and turns.
Nasaan Ka Man will be shown this month. Young singer Christian Bautista interprets the soundtrack.
