Demandahan nina Claudine at Joann, tatapusin naBilly Balbastro For over a year now, pinag-uusapan ang mga kaso involving movie star Claudine Barretto and journalist Joann Maglipon. Nagpa-interview si Claudine to explain/justify her filing the case. This is ironic dahil parang tables are turned dito. Kahit saan ka pumunta -- sa Hollywood, London at Pilipinas -- libel cases are filed by showbiz personalities and celebrities against media practitioners. Not the editors and writers laban sa movie stars, dahil larangan ng editors ang media. Isang pangit na situwasyon ito: kilalang editor, powerful in media, with her own cliques vs. a well-known movie star, topnotch in her field. May hula kami na nang nag-sink in ang lahat ng ito sa mga tao na we can say "hold strings to their stomach, minds and hearts," they pulled some strings. Papayag ba ang Gokongwei business clan (with their international reputation) na ang isang editor working for them is the initiator of these libels cases laban sa isang aktres who has less "power, clique and influence"? *** Heto, I have good news for you: By the time you read this, baka tinapos na ng bawat panig ang kanilang alitan. Mula sa aming source, nalaman namin na all set na pumayag ang both sides, sina Joann at Claudine "to put all legal battles and issues to rest". So, the legal battles between the two ladies would end after long months of media attention.

So, that's good news if it's true. I wonder if ABS really intervened. Well, that's very nice of them if they did. Afterall, Dine is their #1 talent.
Thanks for the post Jenny.

Kaya, to set the record straight, nag-issue si Lisa ng official statement in Jo-Ann’s defense, which reads: “Jo-Ann Maglipon is a very important member of Summit Media and a close personal friend of the Gokongwei family. “She will never be a burden to us. Yes! is the third most-read local magazine today according to the Synovate Media Atlas study, and Summit’s second most profitable because it is a fantastic editorial product. “We are proud of Jo-Ann and her team and will support her without any second thoughts any day.” www.journal.com.ph/index.php?page=n...date=2006-10-20

— GRACE DELA CRUZ[/b]

DOJ clears Claudine of libel raps
The Department of Justice on Tuesday cleared actress Claudine Barretto in a libel case filed against her by YES! magazine editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon, ABS-CBN News reported.
In resolving Barretto's petition for review, DOJ dismissed the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office's finding of probable cause to indict the actress for her statements. Barretto had said in her complaint that she had been a victim of "unfair and irresponsible journalism" as well as human rights violation.
Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said he found nothing libelous about Barretto's statements that were published on People's Tonight and People's Journal and aired over the entertainment news segment of GMA-7's "24 Oras" newscast in July 2005. He said Barreto did not directly refer to Maglipon as an unfair and irresponsible journalist and human rights violator.
He said Barretto merely expressed her feelings, adding that the actress' statements were "fair commentaries" and did not show malice and bad faith.
He questioned why Maglipon did not sue the tabloids' publishers and the show's producer for publishing and airing Barreto's alleged derogatory statements.
Gonzalez also questioned the timing of the filing of the libel case against Barretto, saying the complaint had seemed like an "afterthought."
Maglipon filed her complaint in August 2005, a month after Barretto filed a damage suit against the editor and asked the court to permanently bar Maglipon from coming near her.
Barretto accused Maglipon of publishing in YES! behind-the-scene pictures of the defunct ABS-CBN fantasy series "Marina," pictures of the house being constructed by Barretto's husband, Raymart Santiago, and the christening of the couple's adopted daughter, Sabina. Actress Claudine Barretto, magazine editor settle dispute
By DJ Yap Inquirer Last updated 11:29am (Mla time) 11/08/2006
THE LEGAL dispute between television and movie actress Claudine Barretto and magazine editor Jo-Ann Maglipon finally came to an end Wednesday, with both camps agreeing to a compromise.
Maglipon’s lawyer, Sandra Coronel, said the civil suit Barretto filed against her client was dismissed by Quezon City regional trial court Judge Ramon Cruz after the parties submitted a joint motion to dismiss the case.
Coronel said Maglipon and Barretto signed a memorandum of agreement to formalize the settlement. She declined however to disclose the terms, citing confidentiality clauses.
She did say that the agreement covered the libel case Maglipon had filed against Barretto. Coronel said she had filed a motion to withdraw the case, also on Wednesday.

DOJ ruling 'irrelevant'; YES! editor, actress reach agreement—lawyer
After the Department of Justice reversed the ruling of the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office that recommended the filing of three counts of libel against actress Claudine Barretto before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court, the lawyer of the complainant—Jo-Ann Maglipon—said the development was now “irrelevant” citing an agreement by both parties to withdraw cases against each other.
“As early as October 20, Claudine [Barretto], Jo-Ann Maglipon and [her daughter] Pat had already signed a memorandum of agreement to withdraw all cases against each other,” Maglipon’s lawyer Sandy Coronel told YES! Online.
“They had already withdrawn the cases…so it is irrelevant kung anong nangyari [sa case] because it is the intention of the parties to withdraw the cases.”
According to Coronel, a motion to dismiss the cases shall be submitted to the QC-RTC today, November 8. “After that, the motion to withdraw the cases will be acted upon,” Coronel added.
Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez ordered the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office on November 7 to withdraw Maglipon’s cases against Barretto after concluding that the statements that were attributed to the actress were "not libelous."
That order overturned the September 11 recommendation made by QC prosecutors to file three counts of libel against Barretto before the QC-RTC. Gonzalez said Maglipon could still appeal the decision.
Maglipon had filed seven counts of libel against Barretto over the actress’ statements that she was an “unfair and irresponsible journalist” and a human rights violator. These statements, which were made public on July 2005, Maglipon said besmirched her reputation as a professional journalist and a human rights advocate.
Barretto had earlier filed a damage suit against Maglipon, editor of YES! Magazine, over pictures that appeared on the publication without her consent. The pictures included behind the scenes photographs of Barretto’s defunct fantaserye Marina, the construction of her house, and an “offering ceremony” of her adopted daughter, Sabina.
