Claudine just wants some peace and quiet
By Gabby Libarios
If we believe what she says, Claudine Barretto doesn’t need all the riches to make her happy. After all, she’s practically swimming in money after years of lording it over the soap opera block on TV and the local movie box-office.
She does not need record-breaking box-office hits to reclaim her throne as everybody’s favorite actor, either. She has long let other celebrities, even younger ones who are products of sensationalized talent searches, to steal the thunder from her, giving them a chance to relish the bittersweet taste of fleeting success. She has enough trophies from various award-giving bodies to affirm her success.
At this point, she wants more than anything else just peace and quiet. She wants to make peace with everyone.
“I don’t want to speak anymore, the lesser you speak, the better,” Claudine says in reply when a member of the press asked the current status of the mediation proceedings between her legal counsel and that of Yes editor Jo Anne Maglipon. This issue stemmed from an incident months earlier after the star of ABS-CBN’s now-defunct soap Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin accused Maglipon of “unfair and irresponsible journalism.” Maglipon slapped Barretto back with a libel suit for besmirching her reputation.
“This way, you won’t be misinterpreted,” Claudine quickly adds.
Although Claudine also keeps mum on certain sensitive (read: family) matters, giving only curt and vague answers when asked, she wants everybody to know that she feels more peaceful, if not happier now.
Claudine owes her newfound calm and peace of mind to her renewed ties with her faith, which has brought so much joy and meaning into her life. “There are lots of things that happened to me since I was baptized into Christianity,” she narrates. “I have become at ease and relaxed. Plus, I have a daughter now. I just have nothing to complain about.”
Until the time when all kinks are straightened out and all hatchets finally buried, Claudine is content with what the present offers her. She’s still young and a very much bankable artist. She has no reasons to be in hurry.
Claudine has recently signed with project developer Earth + Style (pronounced as “earth and style”) as its first celebrity image endorser.
According to chief operating officer Jacinto Ng Jr., Claudine is the perfect choice for the company. “From the very start, there were no other names in our minds than Claudine’s. There were no market research whatsoever, only a strong gut feel,” he says. “And the fact that she’s getting married and settling next year makes her even more perfect.”
Such project also allows the star of Dubai and Milan to design a number of houses, which will be named after her. It’s something she has been wanting to do, but never gotten around to doing since various projects and engagements have kept her hands full most of the time.
“Every family deserves a house which they can call their own, because I know for a fact that not everyone get to live in the house of their dreams,” she says.
Even though she’s already living in her dream house, Claudine wants to have another house. “If possible, I want a house in the south, north, east, and west.”
While she’s engaged in bringing other people’s dream houses to life, she also lets the press in on her private life.
As of this writing, preparations and other plans for her wedding with Raymart Santiago on March 27, 2006 are underway. “We chose March 27 because that’s the wedding anniversary of Raymart’s parents,” Claudine says with a smile. “For our honeymoon, I would like to go back to Venice, where we shot Milan. I was just stunned by the place.”
Claudine Barretto is currently shooting for Sukob, directed by Chito Roño. Kris Aquino also stars in this movie. “This should be interesting. I’ve never heard of any nationality in the world that practices this belief,” she concludes.
