"Walang Kapalit," the much awaited teleserye team-up of Claudine Barretto and Piolo Pascual will start airing today, April 23, on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.
Aside from it being an exciting team-up between two of the country’s most sought-after and respected talents, what makes "Walang Kapalit" a much-anticipated soap is the fact that it is another directorial job of Wenn Deramas, who’s currently one of the country’s most successful TV and film directors.
Wenn has proven, with the many box-office hit movies he has done that he is indeed a director na "walang kapalit."
He may be a big success now, but Wenn’s success wasn’t instant. He does not deny the fact that his family was poor, "my mother was a book dealer who would go from bookstore to bookstore and sometimes she would bring me with her, iniiwanan ako sa isang book store kapag pagod na akong maglakad," he recalled. His hardworking mother was, naturally, his biggest inspiration, his "Tanging Ina."
It was poverty that made Wenn determined to be a success in his endeavors. After graduating from the University of Sto . Tomas (he took up Hotel & Restaurant Management) where he was active in the university’s theater community Teatro Tomasino, Wenn was hired as a production assistant in the magazine show "Tatak Pilipino" in December 1990. He branched out to become a production assistant in other ABS-CBN shows, including "Bistek" and "Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata."
In 1991, Wenn on to "Teysi ng Tahanan," where he became the writer of the show’s Friday episode, and handled writer, director, musical director and editor of the memorable "Kung Maibabalik Ko Lang" segment. From there, he worked on many of ABS-CBN’s variety and drama shows as writer. The list includes "Eh Kasi Bata," "Sang Linggo nAPO Sila," "Flames," "Showbiz Lingo," "Maalaala Mo Kaya," and "Star Drama Presents."
Wenn finally became head writer in the mid-90s for two radically different shows: The game show "Ready Get Set Go" and the crime drama "Ipaglaban Mo. " He then became executive producer of the "Calvento Files" that Wenn first started directing, with his first episode as a director broadcast in September l996.
His biggest break as a director came in l997, when his project "Mula sa Puso" first broadcast. The show was his first soap opera, his first collaboration with Claudine Barretto, and it became a big hit for the network. He also took on selected episodes of Star Drama Presents, "Maalaala Mo Kaya," and "Wansapanataym."
It was in l998 when Wenn’s first movie for Star Cinema,"Dahil Mahal na Mahal Kita," was released. It starred Claudine Barretto, Rico Yan and Diether Ocampo and its success made the three young stars, and its director, a certified force to be reckoned with. The following year, was a busy one for Wenn, as he did among others, "Saan Ka Man Naroroon," and "Mula sa Puso: The Movie."
The following years saw a succession of highly popular projects for the prolific Wenn: "Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan" in 2001, starring Claudine Barretto and Carlos Agassi; "Kung Ikaw ay Isang Panaginip" in 2002, with Jolina Magdangal, Leando Muñoz and Raphael Rosell; "Buttercup" in 2003, with an all-star cast of Claudine Barretto, Piolo Pascual, Diether Ocampo, Assunta de Rossi, Carlos Agassi, Onemig Bondoc and Ciara Sotto.
Also in 2003 was "Ang Tanging Ina," starring Ai Ai de las Alas, which became one of the biggest box-office hits in Philippine Cinema history. In 2004 came the very first fantaserye, "Marina," one of the biggest TV hits in recent history, and then "Volta," which reunited Wenn with Ai Ai. In 2005, there was "D Supers," and on TV, "Kampanerang Cuba ," his first collaboration with Anne Curtis. In 2006 came the hit Vilma Santos tribute "D’ Lucky Ones" with Sandara Park , Joseph Bitangcol, Eugene Domingo and Pokwang. He also made his first movie outside Star Cinema: Imus Films’ "Kapag Tumibok ang Puso," starring Bong Revilla and Ai Ai de las Alas.
In an intimate luncheon with a select group of entertainment writers, Wenn revealed that when he was starting out, he wanted just one thing: "To be the Chaning Carlos of Star Cinema. Don’t laugh, it’s true." He said he idolized the late Chaning for his brand of comedy."
We did many teleseryes in the past, we know each other very well," but of course, everyone in showbiz knows that they had a falling out of sort after "Marina." Together they did about six teleseryes, and two movies. When "Walang Kapalit" was offered to him, Wenn asked them to ask Claudine if she was ready to work with him again. Of course, the answer was yes, and so the tandem is back.
By the way, five episodes of "Walang Kapalit" were shot in Australia , where Wenn said they had ghost experiences in the hotel where they were billeted. He himself saw an image of a guy in his mirror. They found out a guy committed suicide in that hotel.
Anyway, watch out for the initial episode of "Walang Kapalit" tonight on ABS-CBN.
