CATCHES OF THE DAY
The fresh, handsome faces on the new fantasy soap “Marina’ take to show business like fish to water. Joy Rojas meets the boy.

Although they’re not sure if they would love a mermaid in real life, the three newest stars of ABS-CBN’s fantaserye Marina have already fallen hook, line and sinker for the soap’s on-screen siren Claudine Barretto. “She’s supportive of us, mabait, di ka niya pababayaan,” say’s Alvin Marquez. “I think Claudine is perfect,” says Luke Jickain. “I’m a new actor but whenever we do scenes together, I feel very relaxed and more confident.”
Unfolding episodes of this five-season underwater drama shot on the beaches of Batangas and Pangasinan should reveal which guy winds up with the prized catch Claudine in the end. For now, a dreamy shot like this ensures that the three will be reeling in a large female following in no time.
LUKE JICKAIN
Though playing marine biologist Quintin Sandico is Luke’s first-ever acting experience, he’s already had a taste of the star treatment. Down with a fever on the soap’s first shooting day, his condition so alarmed Claudine Barretto, she screamed to the crew. “Oh my God si Luke may sakit! Bring him water, bring him medicine!” “Wow, grabe, parang akong prinsipe!” laughs Luke of the incident. “Wala akong masabi!” Other than having to wake up before the dawn to reach the beach by seven, and fumbling his lines in a scene with an infinitely patient Snooky Serna, acting has been a breeze for this 18-yr-old marketing major from San Beda College. “It’s fun!” he says. I don’t feel like I’m working.” Then again, Luke always made smiling before the camera look so easy; the half-French, half-Filipino has been a ramp and fashion magazine model for the past two years.
ALVIN MARQUEZ
Alvin has definitely come a long way----and not just from years of bit TV roles and stints as a ramp and catalog model. A native of Nagcarlan, Laguna, the 23-years-old moved to Manila at 17 in the hopes of making it big, “Life in Laguna is comfortable, but I’m a dreamer,” he says. “I want to learn something new everyday.” True to form, Alvin took a scuba-diving course in Boracay to prepare for his role as the mysterious Randolph. “I really love the water,” he avers. “Since I was kid, I’ve always loved going to the beach and listening to the sound of the waves. It’s very relaxing.” While starring in Marina has put him in the company of Claudine, Meryl Soriano and Joel Torre, in real life, Alvin is alone. The actor recently broke with his girlfriend, who left for the States to study. “We understood that we both still wanted to do things,” he says. So sapat na ‘yung alam namin na mahal naming ang isa’t isa.” Shall we then say that he’s now single and searching? The probinsiyano can only blush.
ABEL TOLENTINO
Playing scuba diver Ronald Martinez isn’t a stretch for Abel: His on-screen buddy Randolph (played by Alvin Marquez) has been his real-life best friend since the two met as Game Boys in Game Ka Na Ba? And his aloofness towards TV love interest Meryl Soriano mirrors his own torpe nature. “The first approach,” he says, “is always the hardest part.” As for the scuba-diving part, Abel admits that he still needs to work on his strokes. “But I live in Navotas where it always floods, so at home naman ako sa tubig,” he quips. Land sports are more to his liking. Abel, who owns a gym in his neighborhood, has a black belt in karate and once taught Pilates and tae-bo. Should future roles require him to wear a lab coat instead of a wet suit, this talent is sure to deliver. A graduate of BS Biology from De La Salle University, his original ambition was to become a doctor.
